Faster Recovery After Breast Augmentation
Have you been considering breast augmentation surgery for some time but are worrying you can’t find the time for the recovery? The MINKST Recovery Technique (formally known as the Rapid Recovery Technique) allows the ability to return to many normal duties* within 48 hours of breast implant surgery.
Our very own MINKST Medical Director, Dr Daniel Fleming, introduced the MINKST Recovery Technique to Australia 20 years ago and has personally used this technique successfully on thousands of patients.
Let’s Get Technical: How the MINKST Recovery Technique Works
The MINKST Recovery Technique is based on an article published by Dr John Tebbets, a Texas Plastic Surgeon and it follows the below important points to achieve a shorter recovery period:
- Reducing Blood Loss
Using special operating instruments and techniques throughout surgery, the MINKST Recovery Technique is a method of dissection of the breast implant pocket that aims to reduce trauma to the tissue and blood loss to only a few mls per side. This can then reduce post-operative inflammation and therefore pain. - A Deep Sleep
Operating under General Anaesthesia ensures the patient is in a full deep sleep and can be fully relax their pectoral muscles. We do not use twilight sedation and a local anaesthetic is only used around the incision site. - Post Operative Movement
We encourage post operative movement (within comfort). Wearing post operative bras, strapping or garments are not routinely needed and there are no restrictions on putting your arms above your head. In fact, we encourage you to do this throughout your recovery and even before you leave the hospital - Limiting Strong Painkillers
When the above is taken into account, there will be reduced pain and discomfort and this means less postoperative medication is required. Which in itself also contributes to a faster recovery because strong painkillers have been known to slow healing. Not to mention the other risks associated with powerful pain medications.
Breast augmentation recovery time
While no patients can be promised they can be back to normal duties* within the 48 hour recovery time, many experience this. For example a typical patient may be able to go shopping, out to dinner, or drive a car short distances within 48 hours after surgery. Additionally, patient surveys have shown almost half only need paracetamol to manage any discomfort.
*Normal duties do NOT include gym, sports or lifting heavy items and you still will require the normal 4-6 week recovery period before taking on anything more strenuous.

Frequently Asked Questions: MINKST Recovery Technique
Every patient recovers differently, but many patients are able to resume light, non-strenuous activities — such as short outings or errands — within about 48 hours of surgery. Gym, sports, contact activities and lifting heavy items are excluded from this early period, and the usual 4–6 week recovery window still applies before resuming anything more strenuous.
The MINKST Recovery Technique is an approach to breast augmentation surgery and aftercare developed to reduce blood loss and tissue trauma during surgery, avoid unnecessary sedation, encourage early gentle movement, and reduce reliance on strong painkillers — all aimed at supporting a faster, more comfortable recovery.
Many patients are able to drive short distances within 48 hours if they feel comfortable doing so, and not on heavy pain medication, though this varies from person to person and your doctor will advise based on your individual recovery.
Routine use of a post-operative bra, strapping or other surgical garments isn’t required with the MINKST Recovery Technique. Patients are also encouraged to move their arms freely, including above their head, before leaving hospital.
The MINKST Recovery Technique uses general anaesthesia rather than twilight sedation, with local anaesthetic used only around the incision site. This is one of the specific choices behind the technique’s approach to recovery — your doctor can talk you through why this anaesthesia approach is used and what it means for you.
