Surgery Day

Your procedure will be performed as day surgery under general anaesthetic in an accredited, licensed hospital. The breast implant removal surgery itself takes around an hour. You will spend typically a couple of hours under close supervision in the recovery area before being discharged. You will need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for the first night.

Breast explant (breast implant removal), like any surgical procedure, carries certain risks that individuals should be aware of before making a decision.

Common risks associated with breast explant include infection, bleeding, adverse reaction to anaesthesia, scarring, changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry. Additionally, breast tissue may be stretched or thinned after implant removal, impacting the natural appearance of the breasts which may result in the want for future revision surgeries.

How long do saline breast implants last?
On average, saline breast implants last around 10 to 15 years before they may need to be replaced due to issues such as deflation, rupture, or changes in breast appearance. Saline implants are not regularly used by our MINKST doctors / surgeons due to the risk of deflation.

How long does it take to heal after breast implant removal?
The healing time after breast implant removal varies but typically involves initial discomfort for a few days to a week, with swelling and bruising subsiding over several weeks. It’s crucial to follow your post-operative instructions and attend follow-up appointments for optimal recovery.

What will my breasts look like after having breast implants removed?
Post-explant appearance varies depending on factors like skin elasticity, implant size, and tissue changes. The goal is to get your breasts looking as close to what they did before implants. Sometimes a breast lift can be used in conjunction with the explant. Scarring depends on incision type and healing. It’s normal to experience emotional adjustment, seeking support from loved ones or professionals if needed. Ultimately, individual experiences and outcomes vary, so discussing expectations with your MINKST doctor/ surgeon beforehand can provide realistic insights.

In Australia, Medicare may cover some of the cost of breast implant removal surgery under certain circumstances. If the removal is deemed medically necessary due to complications or health concerns, such as implant rupture, capsular contracture, or other issues impacting your health, Medicare may provide coverage.

When is breast implant removal covered by insurance?
However, if the removal is purely for cosmetic reasons or personal preference, Medicare typically does not cover the cost. In such cases, you would be responsible for covering the expenses associated with the procedure.
