Rhinoplasty

Melbourne

What is rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose. It can correct a variety of concerns, including aesthetic changes like altering the size, shape, or proportion of the nose, as well as functional issues such as breathing difficulties caused by structural defects.

Your doctor/ surgeon will consider your facial features, along with the skin on your nose and your desired results to ensure your Surgery Plan provides you with the best results possible.

Your doctor / surgeon will also ensure you have a clear understanding of the risk of your surgery including potential complications and the recovery.

Surgery Day

Your procedure will be performed as day surgery under general anaesthetic in an accredited, licensed hospital. Facelift surgery itself usually takes two-four hours. You will spend typically a couple of hours under close supervision in the recovery area before being discharged. Occasionally an overnight stay may be recommended. You will need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for the first night.

RECOVERY & RISKS

Recovery

Initial recovery typically takes 1-2 weeks, during which time bruising and swelling are common. Most patients can return to work after this time. Full results may take up to a year as the swelling continues to reduce and the nose heals completely.

Risks

Like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries certain risks. Common risks include infection, bleeding, and adverse reactions to anaesthesia. There may also be temporary or permanent changes in sensation, such as numbness around the nose, or visible scarring, particularly with the open technique. In some cases, patients may experience difficulty breathing or dissatisfaction with the cosmetic outcome, which could require revision surgery. Additionally, swelling, bruising, and prolonged healing are common, and results may take time to fully develop.

It is crucial to consult with an appropriately qualified doctor / surgeon, thoroughly discuss all the potential risks, and carefully weigh the benefits against the risks to make an informed decision.

FAQs

Will there be noticeable scarring?
Rhinoplasty is designed to minimise visible scarring. In many procedures, incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no external scars. Your doctor will ensure that procedures requiring external incisions are discreet and often barely noticeable once healed.

How long does it take for bruising and swelling to go down?
After rhinoplasty, bruising and swelling are common, especially around the eyes and nose. The majority of bruising typically fades within 1-2 weeks, while noticeable swelling can take a bit longer, with most swelling subsiding within 4-6 weeks. However, subtle swelling, especially at the tip of the nose, can take up to a year to fully resolve as the nose heals completely and the final shape becomes visible.

What is Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum, which is the cartilage and bone that divides the nostrils. A deviated septum can cause breathing difficulties, nasal congestion, and other issues like snoring or recurrent sinus infections. During the procedure, the surgeon repositions or removes parts of the septum to straighten it and improve airflow. Unlike rhinoplasty, which focuses on the appearance of the nose, septoplasty is primarily aimed at enhancing nasal function. However, it can sometimes be combined with rhinoplasty for both functional and aesthetic improvements.
