Rhinoplasty Techniques: Which one is right for me?

Rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” is one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries around the world. Whether you’re looking to enhance the look of your nose or fix breathing problems, a nose surgery covers both aesthetics and function. Rhinoplasty techniques can vary a lot based on your unique needs, your anatomy, and your doctor’s expertise.

What are the different Rhinoplasty techniques?

Open Rhinoplasty vs Closed Rhinoplasty:

1. Open Rhinoplasty

Open Rhinoplasty Illustration. The open rhinoplasty technique involves an incision across the columella, the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils. This approach allows for the skin of the nose to be lifted, much like a car hood, exposing the lower nasal structures. Making it ideal for more complex cases such as:

  • Significant reshaping or nose reconstruction.
  • Correcting severe asymmetry or deformities.
  • Revising a previous rhinoplasty.

2. Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty technique: An illustrationDuring the closed rhinoplasty procedure, all incisions are made within the nostrils, leaving no external scars. This technique is typically used for less complicated adjustments where minimal structural change is required, such as minor reshaping or refining the nasal tip.

The key advantages of closed rhinoplasty are shorter surgery time, reduced swelling, invisible scarring and faster recovery time. However, the limited visibility can make intricate corrections more challenging.

3. Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision Rhinoplasty surgery is a secondary procedure performed to address issues from a previous rhinoplasty, such as unsatisfactory results or complications. These issues may include persistent nasal humps, an overly scooped bridge, a tip that remains too bulbous or appears pinched, an unnatural or unbalanced nasal shape, or ongoing breathing problems. Depending on the complexity your doctor may use either the open or closed approach.

4. Functional Rhinoplasty

Functional Rhinoplasty surgery uses either open or closed rhinoplasty techniques to focus on improving the function of the nose, particularly to address structural issues that interfere with breathing. Aesthetic rhinoplasty and functional rhinoplasty can also be performed simultaneously.

Different types of functional rhinoplasty are:

  • Septoplasty (or septal reconstruction): Straightening a deviated nasal septum.
  • Nasal Valve Repair: Strengthening or widening the nasal valves with cartilage grafts.
  • Turbinate Reduction: Reducing the size of nasal turbinates to improve airflow.
  • Reconstructive Rhinoplasty: Restoring nasal structure after injury or prior surgery.

5. Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Also called a “liquid rhinoplasty”, this non-invasive procedure uses dermal fillers to temporarily alter the nose’s shape. While it’s ideal for subtle adjustments, it cannot address structural issues or long-term goals. Typically, a liquid rhinoplasty lasts between 6 to 18 months.

Which Rhinoplasty technique is right for me?

Many doctors feel that the open approach provides better precision and accuracy, even if it comes with more scarring and swelling than the closed method. When it comes to deciding which technique is right for you, it really depends on the doctor’s expertise, your nose’s structure, and what you’re hoping to achieve.
