What is Blepharoplasty surgery?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. It involves the removal of excess skin, fat, and muscle to address issues such as drooping eyelids, puffiness, and under-eye bags, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed appearance. This surgery can also improve peripheral vision obstructed by sagging upper eyelids.

RECOVERY & RISKS

Recovery
Recovery typically involves 1–2 weeks of downtime. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities within 10–14 days. Full recovery, including the resolution of swelling and bruising, may take several weeks to a few months. Adhering to post-operative care instructions is crucial for optimal healing.

Risks
As with any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty carries certain risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Dry eyes
  • Difficulty closing eyes
  • Scarring
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Asymmetry

It is important to consult with an appropriately qualified surgeon or doctor, thoroughly discuss all the potential risks, and carefully weigh the benefits against the risks to make an informed decision.

FAQs

What is blepharoplasty and who is a good candidate?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure to remove excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It’s ideal for people who experience droopy upper eyelids, under-eye bags, or sagging skin that interferes with vision. Candidates are typically in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the results.

How long does the eyelid surgery recovery take?
Most patients can return to work and normal activities within 7–14 days. Bruising and swelling usually subside significantly in the first week, although subtle healing continues for several months.

Are the results permanent?
The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting. While surgery can’t stop the natural aging process, the improvements – especially the removal of excess skin and fat – can last many years. Upper eyelid surgery typically lasts 5–10 years or more, while lower eyelid surgery results often last even longer.

Will there be visible scars?
Incisions are carefully placed in the natural creases of the eyelids (for upper blepharoplasty) or just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid (for lower blepharoplasty), making scars minimal and discreet. Over time, they usually fade to become barely noticeable.
