What Is Breast Fat Transfer? Comparing Fat Transfer, Implants and Hybrid Breast Augmentation
Last updated: March 2026
What is a breast fat transfer procedure?
Autologous fat grafting, also known as breast fat transfer or fat injections, is a procedure that works to add volume and reshape the breast using your own body fat. This procedure can provide a long-lasting, natural enhancement to increase the size of the breasts and is a good option for those wishing to achieve a small enhancement without silicone implants. Because the procedure is performed using fat taken from your own body, your breasts will feel soft and have natural movement.
How does breast fat transfer work?
Fat is removed via liposuction from areas such as the outer thighs, tummy and love handles, then injected into the breast area where it will take on a new blood supply and become living fat again.
It’s important to note that suitable candidates will need to have enough donor fat available for transfer. Over the following weeks post-surgery, you can expect a small decrease in breast size, as some of the new fat will metabolise (or be reabsorbed) by your body.
After about six months, the remaining fat cells should be enduring, with results that can last a lifetime.
What is hybrid breast augmentation?
Hybrid breast augmentation combines the use of breast implants with fat transfer.
This approach allows for the guaranteed volume and projection of an implant, while also using your own fat to soften the overall look and feel. The fat is typically injected around the implant, particularly in areas such as the upper chest, cleavage, or along the edges, to create a more natural contour.
Why choose a hybrid breast augmentation?
Hybrid breast augmentation can be a great option if you are looking for:
- A more natural look and feel compared to implants alone
- Additional fullness in areas where implants alone may be limited, such as the cleavage or upper chest
- Subtle contouring and smoothing around the implant edges
- A combination of body sculpting (via liposuction) and breast enhancement
Who is the ideal candidate for hybrid breast augmentation?
Hybrid breast augmentation is suited to patients seeking a more tailored, natural-looking result than implants alone may achieve.
You may be a suitable candidate if you:
- Want the added volume and projection of implants with a softer, more natural finish
- Have thinner breast tissue or limited natural breast coverage
- Are concerned about visible implant edges or rippling
- Would like improved fullness in specific areas such as the upper chest or cleavage
- Have enough donor fat available for transfer
- Are open to a slightly longer procedure and recovery compared to implants alone
This approach is particularly popular for patients wanting a result that appears less “augmented” and more in proportion with their natural body shape.
Breast fat transfer, implants or hybrid breast augmentation: which is right for you?
All techniques can produce beautiful, long-lasting results – so which one is right for you?
| Breast fat transfer | Breast implants | Hybrid breast augmentation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Small, natural enhancement without implants | Significant increase in volume, projection and fullness | The best of both — noticeable volume with a softer, more natural result |
| Volume increase | Subtle — usually up to one cup size | Significant — customisable size and projection | Significant — with fat used to refine and soften |
| Look and feel | Very natural — uses your own body fat | Natural-looking with the right surgical plan | Natural — fat softens implant edges and contours |
| Involves liposuction? | Yes | No | Yes |
| Silicone implants? | No | Yes | Yes |
| Theatre time | Longer (liposuction involved) | Shorter | Longer (liposuction involved) |
| Price point | Higher than implants alone | Lower starting point | Higher than implants alone |
| Ideal candidate | Has sufficient donor fat; wants a subtle, implant-free result | Wants clear volume increase; comfortable with implants | Wants volume but has thinner tissue, visible rib outlines, or wants a softer finish |
