What is a breast fat transfer?
Autologous fat grafting, also known as breast fat transfer or fat injections, is a procedure that works to add volume and reshape the breast using your own body fat. This procedure can provide a long-lasting, natural enhancement to increase the size of the breasts and is a good option for those wishing to achieve a small enhancement without silicone implants. Because the procedure is performed using fat taken from your own body, your breasts will feel soft and have natural movement.
Fat is removed via liposuction from areas such as the outer thighs, tummy and love handles, then injected into the breast area where it will take on a new blood supply and become living fat again.
It’s important to note that suitable candidates will need to have enough donor fat available for transfer.
Important: over the weeks following surgery, you can expect a small reduction in breast size, as some of the transferred fat will be metabolised (naturally reabsorbed) by your body. This is normal and expected. Fat survival rates vary between patients, and your MINKST surgeon will factor this into the planning of your procedure.

After about six months, the remaining fat cells should be enduring, with results that can last a lifetime.
What are breast implants?
Breast implants are the most established form of breast augmentation, using silicone or saline implants to add volume, shape and projection. Unlike fat transfer, implants provide a guaranteed and predictable increase in size that doesn’t reduce over time.

What is hybrid breast augmentation?
Hybrid breast augmentation combines the use of breast implants with fat transfer.
This approach allows for the guaranteed volume and projection of an implant, while also using your own fat to soften the overall look and feel. The fat is typically injected around the implant, particularly in areas such as the upper chest, cleavage, or along the edges, to create a more natural contour.
Why choose a hybrid breast augmentation?
Hybrid breast augmentation can be a great option if you are looking for:
- A more natural look and feel compared to implants alone
- Additional fullness in areas where implants alone may be limited, such as the cleavage or upper chest
- Subtle contouring and smoothing around the implant edges
- A combination of body sculpting (via liposuction) and breast enhancement
Who is the ideal candidate for hybrid breast augmentation?
Hybrid breast augmentation is suited to patients seeking a more tailored, natural-looking result than implants alone may achieve.
You may be a suitable candidate if you:
- Want the added volume and projection of implants with a softer, more natural finish
- Have thinner breast tissue or limited natural breast coverage
- Are concerned about visible implant edges or rippling
- Would like improved fullness in specific areas such as the upper chest or cleavage
- Have enough donor fat available for transfer
- Are open to a slightly longer procedure and recovery compared to implants alone
This approach is particularly popular for patients wanting a result that appears less “augmented” and more in proportion with their natural body shape.
Fat Transfer vs Implants vs Hybrid: Quick Comparison
All techniques can produce beautiful, long-lasting results – so which one is right for you?
| Breast fat transfer | Breast implants | Hybrid breast augmentation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Small, natural enhancement without implants | Significant increase in volume, projection and fullness | The best of both — noticeable volume with a softer, more natural result |
| Volume increase | Subtle — usually up to one cup size | Significant — customisable size and projection | Significant — with fat used to refine and soften |
| Look and feel | Very natural — uses your own body fat | Natural-looking with the right surgical plan | Natural — fat softens implant edges and contours |
| Involves liposuction? | Yes | No | Yes |
| Silicone implants? | No | Yes | Yes |
| Theatre time | Longer (liposuction involved) | Shorter | Longer (liposuction involved) |
| Price point | Higher than implants alone | Lower starting point | Higher than implants alone |
| Ideal candidate | Has sufficient donor fat; wants a subtle, implant-free result | Wants clear volume increase; comfortable with implants | Wants volume but has thinner tissue, visible rib outlines, or wants a softer finish |

Fat transfer alone typically provides a modest increase - usually around half to one cup size. It is not suited to patients looking for a significant increase in volume. For a larger result, breast implants or a hybrid approach combining fat transfer with implants is likely to be more appropriate.
The fat that survives the transfer process is permanent - it behaves like any other fat in your body, meaning it will respond to weight gain or loss over time. However, not all transferred fat survives: some is reabsorbed in the weeks following surgery. The long-term result reflects the portion of fat that establishes a new blood supply and integrates successfully.
Good candidates for fat transfer have enough donor fat available in areas such as the abdomen, thighs or flanks, are looking for a modest, natural enhancement, and are not seeking a significant increase in cup size. Patients who are very slim or who want a larger result may be better suited to implants or a hybrid approach.
Fat transfer uses only your own body fat to add volume - no implant is involved. Hybrid breast augmentation combines an implant (for guaranteed volume and projection) with fat transfer (to soften the result and improve contouring in areas such as the cleavage or upper chest). Hybrid is suited to patients who want the predictability of an implant but a more natural overall result.
Yes - this is what hybrid breast augmentation involves. The two procedures can be performed in the same surgery session, which means one recovery period. Your MINKST surgeon will advise whether combining the procedures at the same time is appropriate for your specific case, or whether staging them separately would give a better outcome.
Fat is typically taken via liposuction from areas with excess fat, such as the abdomen, outer thighs, love handles or flanks. This also means fat transfer provides a body sculpting benefit in the donor area - a consideration that appeals to many patients who are looking to address both areas in a single procedure.
