Cosmetic Surgery Recovery Checklist: What to Pack for Surgery Week

Cosmetic Surgery Recovery Checklist: Essentials for Surgery Week

Updated June 2026

Surgery week is finally here. You’ve done the research, had your surgery consultation and made your decision – now it’s time to make sure you’re set up for the smoothest recovery possible.

Whether you’re preparing for a Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Liposuction, or Tummy Tuck, having the right items ready before your procedure can meaningfully reduce stress and create a far more comfortable recovery environment.

This cosmetic surgery recovery checklist covers everything you’ll want to have organised before your procedure day – so you can focus on what matters most: resting and healing.

1. Comfort & Clothing

Following surgery, your body will be tender and swollen. Choosing the right clothing in advance will save you from uncomfortable fumbling in those early post-op hours.

Front-opening or zip-up tops

Button-up shirts, zip hoodies, or wrap-style tops mean you’ll never have to raise your arms to get dressed. After breast surgery especially – whether that’s a Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift – this makes a genuine difference in those first 48 hours.

Loose-fitting pants or joggers with an elastic waist

Soft, stretchy bottoms are essential. Avoid anything with a hard waistband or tight compression around the abdomen, particularly if you’re recovering from a Tummy Tuck or Liposuction.

Slip-on shoes or slippers

Bending down to tie laces is surprisingly uncomfortable when you’re sore and swollen. A soft pair of slip-ons covers you from hospital to home without any awkward movement.

Supportive post surgery bra (if applicable)

If your doctor advises post-surgical breast support, a soft, wire-free, front-clasp or zip bra is the right choice. Your MINKST team will guide you on the exact style recommended for your procedure, how to fit it, and where to purchase one.

2. Rest & Recovery Setup

You’ll be spending a significant amount of time resting after your procedure, so the more comfortable and convenient your recovery space, the smoother your experience will be. Set this up before surgery day, not after.

Extra pillows for elevation

Keeping your upper body elevated – particularly after breast surgery – helps reduce swelling and improve comfort. A wedge pillow or a firm stack of cushions works well. For Liposuction and Tummy Tuck recovery, a pillow to hold gently against your abdomen is also recommended.

A bed or couch at a comfortable height

Getting in and out of a very low or very soft bed can be difficult post-surgery. If your bed is low, set up your recovery space on a firmer couch, or add a topper so you’re not struggling to rise every time you need to move.

Entertainment downloaded in advance

Pre-load your tablet or laptop with favourite shows, podcasts, audiobooks, or playlists. You’ll have more quiet time than you’re used to – make it genuinely restful. Download everything before surgery in case you don’t feel like being on screens all day.

Phone charger within easy reach

A longer charging cable means you won’t need to stretch or get up repeatedly. Keep your phone accessible so you can stay connected to your support person and reach the MINKST team easily if you need us.

3. Hygiene & Personal Care

Your regular hygiene and skincare routine may need a few small adjustments during recovery week. These items are often overlooked, but they make a real difference to how you feel day-to-day.

Dry shampoo

Washing your hair involves a lot of arm movement that may not be comfortable in the first couple of days. A good dry shampoo is one of the most underrated surgery week essentials – it keeps you feeling fresh without the effort.

Unscented body wipes

Fragrance-free body wipes are incredibly useful when showering may be limited early in recovery. Keep a pack on your bedside table for easy freshening up without disturbing your incision sites.

Straw or sports water bottle with a long spout

Staying hydrated is critical for healing. A bottle with a built-in straw or long spout means you can sip comfortably while lying back – no straining required.

Gentle moisturiser and lip balm

Anaesthesia and air conditioning can leave skin and lips feeling dry. A light, fragrance-free moisturiser and a quality lip balm are small comforts that genuinely improve your experience during those first couple of days.

4. Nutrition & Nourishment

What you eat and drink during your cosmetic surgery recovery is just as important as rest. Stock your fridge before your surgery date so everything is ready when you arrive home. It is important to eat after surgery (no fasting POST surgery), especially when taking medication.

Nourishing, easy-to-prepare meals

Soups, broths, smoothies, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, and other soft, protein-rich foods are ideal for the first few days of recovery. Batch cook or buy ready-made options in advance – there should be no pressure to prepare meals while you’re resting.

Plenty of water and electrolyte drinks

Hydration supports healing and helps flush anaesthesia from your system. Stock up on water, coconut water, and electrolyte tablets or drinks. Avoid caffeine and alcohol during your early recovery period.

Fibre-rich snacks

Pain medication can slow digestion, even mild varieties. Fibre-rich snacks such as oats, crackers, or fruit can help. Your MINKST team can advise on any dietary adjustments specific to your procedure and prescribed medications.

5. Admin & Practical Items

These items aren’t glamorous – but having them organised before your procedure can make the first days of recovery considerably easier.

Your MINKST post-operative instructions

You’ll receive detailed post-op care instructions from your MINKST team. Keep a printed copy or saved digital version somewhere easily accessible. When in doubt about anything during recovery, these are your first reference point – followed by a call to our team.

A trusted support person

You’ll need someone to drive you home after surgery (18+) and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Brief them in advance on where things are at home and what you might need, including your post-surgery medications and correct dosage. A calm, prepared support person can be extremely helpful.

Medications ready and clearly labelled

Your anaesthetist will provide a list of required medications before you’re discharged from hospital. These will need to be collected from the pharmacy on your way home. Paracetamol (Panadol) is also important to have on hand.

Your MINKST Patient Portal login details

MINKST patients have access to our dedicated Patient Portal – a secure space where your journey details, documents, and care information live. Have your login details saved on your device before surgery day so you can easily reference anything you need during recovery without hunting for paperwork.

Your Surgery Day Hospital Bag Checklist

Keep this list accessible the night before your surgery.

Important: Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before surgery unless your MINKST team has specifically advised otherwise. Arrive with no makeup, nail polish, or fragrance applied. Tip – wash hair the night before surgery and put long hair into a loose comfortable braid for surgery day.

Frequently Asked Questions: Cosmetic Surgery Recovery

Recovery timelines vary by procedure. Most patients feel significantly more comfortable by the end of the first week, but full results and complete healing can take several weeks to months depending on the complexity of the surgery. Your MINKST doctor will provide a personalised recovery timeline at your consultation.

In the first few days, focus on soft, protein-rich, and easy-to-digest foods — soups, broths, yoghurt, eggs, and smoothies work well. Staying well-hydrated and incorporating fibre-rich options helps support healing and manage any digestive slowdown caused by pain medication. Avoid alcohol and caffeine during early recovery.

This depends on your specific procedure and incision locations. Your MINKST post-operative instructions will include clear guidance on when and how to shower safely. In the meantime, fragrance-free body wipes are a great interim solution.
